Meet the Travel Gonk, an adorable easy to crochet magical creature. This is a great little make if you are new to toy making and want to practice your shaping.

This pattern is made using a double knit yarn and a 3 mm hook. You could try this pattern with different types of yarns and hook sizes and see what you can make. This is a great pattern for using up small amounts of yarn that you might have leftover in your stash. You could use a button for the eye or a safety eye. Have fun experimenting.

You Will Need

  • DK yarn – Suggested colours Pink, White and Brown.
  • A 3 mm hook
  • Toy stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors

Tension: Tension is not critical for this project, but it may affect the yarn quantities required.

Measurements: Travel Gonk measures approximately 6 cm tall.

Note: This pattern is worked using the amigurumi method. Work stitches continuously in a spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch. You may find it easier to mark the first stitch of the round, moving the marker up as you work.

Decreasing rounds: You may prefer to use an invisible decrease, this technique will give your finished creation a neater appearance. To do this insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch, then insert your hook into the front loop of the second stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook.  Yarn over hook and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook to complete the stitch.

  • Add a small amount of stuffing to the legs before stitching the leg to the body of your gonk.
  • Position the eye and stitch around the outside to attach it to the body.
  • Use a contrasting yarn to stutch a mouth and add some hair to the top of the head.
