Charlie Bear – Free Crochet Pattern

Meet Charlie, he is a cute little bear who loves cuddles.

This pattern is made using DK yarn and a 3 mm hook and is written using UK crochet terminology.

Below you will find a list of the equipment you will need and a free copy of the pattern with instructions on how to assemble your very own Charlie Bear.

Recommended yarn: Drops Cotton Light

Yarn A: Shade 26 – Jeans Blue

Yarn B: Shade 30 – Dark Grey

Hook: 3 mm

Abbreviations

ch chain stitch

dc double crochet

dc2tog double crochet two stitches together

ss slip stitch

Legs (make 2) – Yarn A

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch 1, 6 dc into the circle (6)

Round 2: *2 dc * repeat 6 times (12)

Round 3 *1 dc, 2 dc * repeat 6 times(18)

Round 4 – 12 dc each st (18)

Stuff the legs

Body – Yarn A

Join the legs – working around the left leg then the right to form the body.

Round 13: ss the legs together with 3 ss, ch 1, dc each st (30)

Round 14 – 28: dc each stitch (30)

Round 29: *3 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (24)

Round 30: * 2 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (18)

Round 31: *1 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (12)

Round 32: dc each stitch (12)

Stuff the body

Round 33: *1 dc, 2 dc* repeat 6 times (18)

Round 34: *2 dc, 2 dc * repeat 6 times (24)

Round 35: *3 dc, 2 dc * repeat 6 times (30)

Round 36 *4 dc, 2 dc * repeat 6 times (36)

Round 37 – 43 dc each st (36)

Round 44: *4 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (30)

Round 45: *3 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (24)

Round 46: *2 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (18)

Round 47: *1 dc, dc2tog* repeat 6 times (12)

Position the safety eyes and stuff the head

Round 48: *dc2tog* repeat 6 times (6)

Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Ears (make 2) – Yarn A

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch 1, 6 dc into the circle (6)

Round 2: *2 dc * repeat 6 times (12)

Round 3 *1 dc, 2 dc * repeat 6 times(18)

Round 4 – 6 dc each st (18)

Fasten off and leave a tail to stitch the ears to the body

Arms (make 2) – Yarn A

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch 1, 5 dc into the circle (5)

Round 2: *2 dc * repeat 5 times (10)

Round 3 *1 dc, 2 dc * repeat 5 times(15)

Round 4 – 7 dc each st (15)

Round 8: *1 dc, dc2tog* repeat 5 times (10)

Stuff the hand

Round 9 – 22: dc each st (10)

Fasten off and leave a tail to stitch the ears to the body

Waistcoat – Yarn B

Foundation Chain – ch 19

Row 1: dc second ch from hook, dc each st (18)

Row 2: dc each st (18)

Row 3: 2 dc, ch 7, skip 6 sts, dc next 4 sts, ch 7, skip 6 sts, 2 dc in the final st (22)

Row 4: dc each st (22)

Row 5: 2 dc, dc next 20 sts, 2 dc (24)

Row 6: 2 dc, dc next 22 sts, 2 dc (26)

Row 7: 2 dc, dc next 24 sts, 2 dc (28)

Row 8: 2 dc, dc next 26 sts, 2 dc (30)

Row 9: 2 dc, dc next 28 sts, 2 dc (32)

To Assemble

Sew the arms to the body between row 31 and 32. Sew the ears to the top of the head.  You can experiment with the position of the ears to create your own little character.

With some contrasting thread (I used pink) sew a little nose and mouth onto your bear.

Sew your button onto the waistcoat.
