Travelling Ava Visits Durham

Ava has been on so many adventures over the Summer that I’m still trying to write them all up. Sometimes it is tough being a narrator for Travelling Ava adventures.

I had been really busy with work so we hadn’t had time for many adventures just before the Summer break. I love Durham, it is really beautiful so where better to visit for a mini adventure.

Although I have visited Durham loads of times before it was Ava’s first visit. She was really excited to see something new and beautiful. Even on a grey overcast day (typical British summertime weather) Durham is stunning.

Our adventure started at the Park and Ride taking the bus into Durham.

Travelling Ava loved exploring the City Centre. There are some really cute shops that you will only find in Durham. There is history everywhere, there is so much to see and do. She needed to get this iconic photo crossing over the Framwelgate Bridge with Durham Cathedral in the background.

So we decided to do something I had never done before in Durham. We visited the Durham Museum and Heritage Centre. If you want to know more about the history of this wonderful city you need to visit here.

Travelling Ava found out more about life in Durham through the ages and the role of the Prince Bishops. Did you know that Durham had a Chancery Court right up until 1972. This is a picture of the 17th century Chancellor’s bench. Imagine if benches could talk, what stories would this bench tell us.

It was really interesting to find out more about Elizabeth Fry. An amazing woman. If you want to find out more about what makes her so awesome you will have to visit the Museum I don’t want to spoil it for you.

Travelling Ava found the story of Sir John Duck amazing. A raven dropped a coin at his feet and this coin started a journey with him going from a poor apprentice to one of Durham wealthiest citizens and Mayor.

There is also amazing sculptures for you to look at in the little sculpture garden. If you would like to find out more about these sculptures or the museum you can visit the website here – click here

It was a really great mini adventure and it was really difficult deciding on a place for lunch because there is so much choice.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Durham? Where should Ava visit in Durham next? Where is your favourite place to visit?

Thank you for taking your time to read this post. Ava would love to hear from you.
